 The role of the Moderator in a debate

It is very simple to understand the primary role of a moderator in a given debate, let's see:

What would a football or basketball game be without a referee?!

Evidently, the game would happen, however, we know what would happen, a game without rules "causes confusion", so this analogy is also similar to this purpose:

Understanding this is as simple as drinking water from a glass, it only goes wrong if you get distracted.

Let's get to this, this personality has the role of controlling the time of the debate, the time each panelist has to speak, redirecting the debate depending on the topic that is taking place, so that the real thematic intention does not go astray and is alienated. that is intended to be addressed; It is the professional's sole responsibility to inform all participants in the "Debate Panel" how the topic and/or subject in question should be discussed, establishing rules and modalities in the application of the quality of each participant in the discussion.

Observation:

The Moderator's position is comfortable, this means that, during the debate, at no time should he take sides with A or B, in their presentations, as their discursive collaboration is neutral (meaning that neither/ the Moderator must take steps to say that he/she agrees or disagrees on this or that point, but has the legitimacy to say that he/she understands or does not understand a certain point in question),It is understood in such a way that if you take a side, you must have left your position of "Debate Moderation" vulnerable to any attack by the Panelists, thus losing your authority in a debate or discussion.

-Furthermore, the Moderator must be impartial, in the way he/she addresses the various issues, must not imply even by a hair's breadth that he/she would be favoring any of the opponents, appealing or re-asking the questions with the aim of indirectly supporting one of the parties, because such a procedure would lower the entire quality of the debate to be discussed.

Since the Moderator is in a comfortable position, he/she should be the last person on the panel who, impossibly, should lose his/her temper because it is understood that at no time should he/she show nervousness or lack of concentration in the way he/she should address the questions to the Panel.

The debate does not belong to the Panelists, but to the Moderator, however we understand that if such a debate goes wrong, it is this character's fault and if it goes well, the applause is given to her., In order to maintain and create a quality debate, the Moderator must research in advance and study his/her Panel in advance, so that he/she knows some behaviors that will enhance his/her debate, opposing the harmful attitude of any Panelist, so that it does not spoil your debate.

The *Moderator's language* must be simultaneously simple and exuberant (simple because he must use terms that each panelist and the public can easily understand) and exuberant because he must use language that is clear and pleasing to the ears, according to the rules of stylistic resources or special effects on words).

-If, when promoting the contradictory, the Moderator realizes that he/she has put a question on the air and no one responds, perhaps for reasons of lack of understanding or timid desire, he/she must choose a Panelist to assist him/her so that, by checking it his eloquence or dialectic, could start a controversy.

A sense of self-criticism should be encouraged in any Moderator after the end of a debate, as we understand that the ultimate objective of a Moderator should be to "Create a productive debate" provoking unparalleled enthusiasm in the audience. 

-In a debate in which there is an Audience, an effort will be required on the part of this character, to transform this passive Audience into an active Audience, during the debate, as this should be done in due course, to pass on his role to the active Audience, in order to direct it some questions or arguments, regarding the topic being addressed, making such people feel included in the debate.

When a Moderator does not prepare the discussion and/or does not research the topic, it is convenient for him not to moderate the chosen topic, this way he will avoid his performance being a fiasco and making his debate fruitless.

The Moderator must have total control of his/her debate, knowing deeply and technically the emotions of his/her Panelists, their opinions, history, beliefs, attitudes, dialectics, intellectuality, argumentative capabilities and their defects, so that such Know what rabbit hole or pack you are getting into.

Another essential thing when moderating a debate, you have to listen carefully to the Panelists' explanations, so that you don't get confused and ask stupid or unrelated questions, develop an "eagle's vision" always seeing in the dark, this metaphor must be interpreted how to pay attention to those side conversations/subjects (call attention to those whose faces are turned towards something outside the debate panel), wake up anyone who is sleeping or distracted, always take care so that any Panelist does not divert the topic under analysis or in Exposition.

-When the Panelists are discussing, do not interrupt, to move on to the next question you have prepared, if they are counter-arguing, let the debate flow by itself until reaching the climax, as few debates reach their maximum point of excellence , which is without a doubt the climax.

Finally, it is a 'sine qua non' condition that, beforehand, the Moderator is the first to antagonize the debate by asking spicy and exciting questions.

🔥Being a Moderator does not mean being a boss, but an advisor should do as much as possible, so as not to sanction, this should be the last resort to use as such.
